The new boardwalk in Cartersville GA is getting a full makeover! The decking rarely gets a lot of attention, but it's one of the most important choices for a bridge or boardwalk project. Price, future maintenance obligations and performance are important considerations. This photo highlights a 100% plastic (HDPE) decking material that is a full standard width 2x8 that has no wood fiber or filler. The galvanized tread with a textured surface is an excellent choice for a steel bridge or steel frame where weight and durability are key factors. Sometimes we have to do work that's trail adjacent. In preparation for the replacement of the Ivy Creek greenway boardwalk near the Environmental Heritage Center in Buford GA, the neighboring apartment complex's retention pond had failed and was pushing rain down the emergency spillway. Unfortunately, this was aimed right at the supports for the boardwalk and had badly washed away the supporting soil. A new spillway extension was planned to turn the water and armor the end with rip rap before the water entered the creek. The primary drain was also fixed by the apartments so that the spillway would go back to being for emergencies only. #gwinnettcounty #gwinnettparksandrecreation #environmentalheritagecenter #bufordga #ivycreekgreenway #protrailbuilder #ptbamember

The heavy duty timber boardwalk is set on timber piles that were driven to refusal, all pressure treated pine lumber and galvanized wire mesh handrails. There are two semi circle decks that can be used as outdoor classrooms, and two ADA ramps that lead to the creek or an mulch outdoor classroom on ground level. Fresh trails for the city of Atlanta Parks and Recreation, @southside_concerned_citizens and @parkpride at Harper Park. A small park near the airport, this small patch of undeveloped area is a refuge to escape the traffic and noise of the city (other than the planes overhead). The first phase of the Wilderness Camp mountain bike park in Bartow County Georgia is nearing completion, and the final touches are going in. With nearly four miles of new trail with a mix of green and blue loops that blend a mix of smooth and fast sections and technical lines. There is also a flowing jump line that is nearly 1/4 miles long. The GC's surveyor was using orange tape, so I'm testing the blue as an alternative. It seems to have similar visibility to the pink on the other side of the photo. We were honored recently to work with the Blue Ridge resource conservation and development council to assist with a new elevated timber puncheon on the Grassy Creek OVT in Spruce Pine North Carolina. The new structure is a 100' long by 4' wide puncheon. A puncheon was chosen over a boardwalk due to the close proximity to environmentally sensitive areas and restrictions against digging or disturbing the ground. The smaller bridge was just a pallet in the mud when we arrived, so the crew decided to use some leftover material to donate a small extra bridge. #trails #boardwalk #protrailbuilder #NorthCarolina #sprucepinenc #ptbamember #hiking #grassycreek #blueridgercd #ovncstorg

All new pressure treated frame and supports with new concrete pads, Composite decking with wire mesh handrails and timber curbing. The new trails at @autrey_mill in @cityofjohnscreekgeorgia is coming along nicely! We are working with the parks department to bring a new sustainable design to life. Many of the existing trails will be permanently closed and the staff will work to rehabilitate those areas and bring them back to a more natural state. We attended the Cobb County open house last night to provide the latest information on the effort to #connectthecomet which will finally create a connection from the Silver Comet Trail and the Atlanta Beltline. This is still in the design phase, but a critical link to connect two of Georgia's most utilized trail systems that will connect many parts of downtown Atlanta, with all of the cities along the SCT that stretches all the way to Alabama. We recently completed the rebuild of an older pedestrian bridge at Shakerag park in Johns Creek Georgia. In order to open the bridge sooner due to the safety hazard it presented, the original timber poles used for the substructure were reused. New supports were installed to support the bridge, and then new decking and handrails were installed. This park is adjacent to both an elementary and middle school, so it was imperative to get this done quickly. We still have some grading to do, but it's in the home stretch. We have completed a new private trail near Burnt Mountain in North Georgia that shadowed a small creek and beautiful 100' waterfall. There is an upper deck right next to the top of the falls, multiple bridges, staircases and trail to connect along the steep and narrow canyon walls over to the second deck that has an amazing view of the waterfall from the opposite side. This trail was 100% hand built and all materials were carried in as there was no access other than what we had created ourselves. #waterfall #newtrails #protrailbuilder #ptbamember #northgeorgia #waterfallhike #watchoutforblackbears

The material has been delivered, and the re-installation will begin next week weather permitting. The new hiking trail at the Yahoola Reservoir near Dahlonega GA is open! This two mile hiking trail is a new upper line to the existing lake perimeter loop. We spent the afternoon checking out a possible rail trail project in Talulah Falls Georgia. The history is fascinating, and you can read more about it at https://www.abandonedrails.com/tallulah-falls-railroad. No one knows what the concrete bunker was for, but it was hidden deep in the woods and had concrete and train rails for a roof. An amazing walk through history and a beautiful location. #talulahfalls #gastateparks #railtrail #newtrails #protrailbuilder #ptbamember

We worked with @fhpaschen and city officials to turn a former overgrown and trash filled creek into a clean and beautiful amenity as well as expanded safe alternatives to driving for the local residents. The reclamation of abandoned rail corridors all over the country is a wonderful way to expand recreation and continue to connect the network of greenway style trails between cities, counties and states. The boardwalk is 14' wide with a HDPE composite deck and stainless steel cable handrails. #Boardwalk #chambleega #Trail #ptbamember #protrailbuider #topdownconstruction #weardeck #pleasedisposeofyourtiresproperly
